peripheral neuropathy and chronic painNeuropathy is one of the more common foot complaints in the world. The term does not diagnose what causes the problem, but simply means the nerves are dysfunctional. Symptoms include burning, tingling, numbness, pain, and oftentimes weakness.

A condition called drop foot can also occur, making it difficult to lift the feet or toes upward. This makes walking difficult or unstable. These symptoms arise in the foot or ankle and may extend into the leg, all the way up to the knee.

Causes of Peripheral Neuropathy

You may have most commonly heard of diabetic neuropathy, as 50-70% of diabetics will have neuropathy. Other causes may be from chemotherapy induced neuropathy, acholic neuropathy, or autoimmune related neuropathy, to name a few. However, the majority of patients with neuropathy are told they have idiopathic neuropathy which means neuropathy of unknown cause.

At Anderson Podiatry Center for neuropathy and chronic pain, we have a different approach than typical practices as we do not employ band aid approaches. We avoid the medications that you’ll commonly be advised to consider if you’re in pain. Instead, we like to get at the root cause of the problem.

Peripheral Neuropathy Treatment Options

Anderson Podiatry Center for Neuropathy and Chronic Pain employs multiple options for neuropathy and we pride ourselves in pursuing non-drug options, which can include laser treatment. We have deeply penetrating laser treatments that are very useful on a conservative basis, and also employ electrical stimulation treatments (Estim), which helps repair nerve damage. Finally, we also do nerve decompression surgeries, which is not much different from doing carpal tunnel type surgery and has a very high success rate.

Peripheral Neuropathy Surgery

These surgeries are outpatient, and patients are able to ambulate, in most cases, immediately after surgery. This innovative approach has led Dr. Anderson to do multiple research papers that have won him an international award called the Tinel’s Award. This award was given to him for his research on advancement of knowledge of the peripheral nervous system in the lower extremity. His groundbreaking study on intraoperative monitoring in diabetics has shown that objectively, we are able to improve the function of the diabetic nerve.

Our mission

Our mission at Anderson Podiatry Center is to provide you with a non-medication option for treatment. We would rather help restore normal nerve function, whether it’s by non-surgical or surgical means, so you can have a more full and vital life.

For many, this could make the difference between an amputation, a full night’s sleep, or weight gain due to medication. Please evaluate and consider our treatment options as we pride ourselves in these approaches.

Dr. Anderson’s book, “A Perfect Night’s Sleep” has been endorsed by A. Lee Delion, MD, PhD. Professor of Plastic Surgery and Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University. “A scholarly book about a problem of wide interest to those whose legs are “on the move”. Dr. Anderson presents a well-reasoned surgical solution that will help many people to have their restless legs become peaceful.”
